What’s nice when I’m here in United States, I can attend as many session as I want, i had yesterday a day full of session and today will be the same :

• Debating security in the cloud (GSL!)

• How to lie with POCs and cost models (GSL!)
• Remoting protocols turned inside out: how graphics and media remoting really works (GSL!)
• Automating XenServer installation and maintenance (GSL!)
• MFCOM to PowerShell: how to make the transition (GSL!)

This is always very interesting to exchange about this themes, and very important to know how things are though and felt by the others.

Otherwise my overall impression on Citrix Synergy 2011 is foggy, I mean there wasn’t really the whole new product line update and majore change announce, just everything about the cloud. I took a pic in the exposition hall, it shows what Synergy was about during 5 days :

The announce around NetScaler (Cloud Products) have been the highlight of the whole event. Some XenServer here and there and some XenDesktop, a little bit of XenApp…

On the networking side, I met a lot of very nice people, people I’m use to share tweets, emails and blogs, this has been a very nice to meet all of them and exchange ideas and beers See you all at the next event !

Citrix Summit is over, now Citrix Synergy takes place, I attended several very interesting sessions :

• Spotlight on the desktop virtualization startups (GSL!) with Simon Bramfitt
• Virtual Reality Check phase IV: best practices for virtualizing Terminal Server and desktop workloads (GSL!) with Ruben Spruijt and Jeroen van de Kamp
• Getting from “Wow to How”, Part 1&2: Designing an architecture for desktop transformation that can adapt and scale with Daniel Feller, Florian Becker and Douglas Demskis.
• Terminal Server vs. VDI: 2011 edition (GSL!) with Brian Madden

and of course the Keynote with many cloud-ouncement delivered by Mark T, many announcement, mostly around network products line I made a list of the essential point shown today :

Kaviza is now a part of Citrix

The partnership with Microsoft is stronger, with the full integration with App-V and System Center VMM, with HDX supporting remote FXand with Hyper-V SP1 supporting 40% more VMs. In Microsoft System Center, a new XenApp connector, updated management packs, SCOM : Monitor and manage XenApp, XenDesktop & NetScaler. XenServer management by managing both Hyper-V and XenServer VMs in a single console. And the v-alliance (Microsoft and Citrix)

GoToMeeting HD Faces : Multistream HD 1920×960, 6 ways video and the public beta is available today HERE

XenClient 2 is official now, is available today as well, Express Edition / Tech Preview and you can grab it HERE, XenClient 2 is : 3x expanded hardware compatibility, Expanded graphic support, Production scale Synchronizer, simplified user experience

The Follow-me data across devices is a kind of Citrix DropBox attached to the receiver, the idea is to have the same data available in the datacenter, on a local device and in the Cloud.

HDX is evolving, 3x faster performance, wire-speed data transfer and printing, New real time UDP/RTP audio stream, Enhanced network efficiency. Multi-Stream for network QoS, Granular, application level QoS. Rich graphics enhancements, Support for Microsoft Remote FX.

XenDesktop 5 now support IntelliCache with the Service Pack 1, Cuts storage costs by 50%, Offload read-write from costly SANs, to cheaper local storage and XenDesktop 5 SP1 is already available for download HERE

NetScaler Cloud Bridge to connect your datacenter to any cloud with full transparency, security and performance, Network transparency, Encrypted connection, Optimized data flow, Standalone Virtual and Appliance editions, available in 10Mbps, 200Mbps, 500Mbps. It will be available in June 2011.

A new project, Citrix Project Olympus is a new cloud infrastructure product based on OpenStack and XenServer. An early access program is available today HERE, otherwise it’s plan for the second half 2011.

Le keynote était très centré sur le cloud, et la façon dont notre travail va ėvoluer en s appuyant sur la technologie pour s aligner sur le business et passer de l ere du tco au tvo: total value of ownership.

Here we are, first Summit day of two dedicated to partners. There will be some big announcement and this is the time I can enjoy technical hand on labs, networking 200% and exchange about technology and concepts.
I went to two sessions today, the first one was about the new XenApp (Code Name IronCove) migration tool and I’m glad to see everything I’ve been doing with Powershell scripts is now incorporated in a nice GUI and shipped with the upcoming XenApp 6.5 version. I make a short description list bellow and I will download and try it as soon as it’s available to public.

• Migrate all the settings from a farm to another
• Need to create Configuration Logging Database after the migration process
• Citrix WebInterface 5.4 leverage the application flow migration
• WorkerGroups Mapping
• System path problem (32/64bit program files and program files (x86) supported during the migration
• And more stuff but I didn’t have wifi during the session

The Configuration Management has been re-branded as well with some more option, which make more sense.

The second session was Reference Architecture and design principles for large scale hosting, it was interesting to learn how Citrix is sharing this information and I was very surprise to see I used the same way on the last big architecture project I’ve been working on, even the architecture design schema look a bit like the one I did a month ago This kind of session give some ideas for the next project and even if I don’t agree on everything, the overall Citrix products allow to distribute all kind of desktop with security and flexibility.

Then it was time for the Keynote, I will make it short, the big announcement is : Citrix acquired Kaviza. The v-consultants, analysts or other member of the v-community saw it coming, I think this is a real strategic move from Citrix and it will definitly bring VDI on another dimension. VDI is becoming mainstream and Kaviza (part of Citrix System now) will help a lot.

This first big European event is over now, I wasn’t able to attend all the session I wanted to go but mostly I’m satisfy by the information I gather and great people I met.

There was no very big announcement, XenDesktop 5 has been unleashed since day 1 but one product have been put under the light by Citrix and this is a great tool for online meeting, the introduce a new feature, a product evolution, GoToMeeting HDFaces (up to 6 video stream during web conference)

Citrix Synergy in Europe is a great way to meet new people, new customers and compare how business is going in the other countries. This is also the best way to have direct input from visionary guys Rick Dehlinger, Shawn Bass, Citrix CTOs etc… This is very important to see everything and understand the way everyone is perceiving evolution of IT and business next years. I gather all the information I can grab and digest it to do my own perception, I can then deliver my through and feeling to my customers.

Next Synergy will be in San Francisco in May 2011 and in Barcelona in October 2011, I really hope to meet you there, this is always a pleasure to meet new people and exchange about our every day job at all levels.

Pour la premiere fois Citrix organisait un Synergy en Europe, et cela a été une réussite, il n’y avait plus de places  disponibles  un mois avant le début de la manifestation.

Citrix a toujours été un cran au dessus sur ce genre d’évènement, choyant les participants au fil des diners et soirées, réussissant à transmettre leur image au travers de ces évènements.

Comme d’habitude, nous avons beaucoup apprécié l’intervention de Mark Templeton, CEO de Citrix qui est le pivot et visonnaire de la stratégie de Citrix.

La semaine au Synergy a été riche de rencontres et d’échanges, avec nos clients et nos partenaires, riches d’annonces et de workshop.

Nous en retiendrons:

• Annonce de Xendesktop 5
• Go to Meeting en HD
• Annonce de Acces Gateway et de NetScaler en VPX (appliance virtuel)
• XenServer 5.6

Citrix, encore une fois, nous démontre que dans la bataille du Cloud, il est le seul acteur à avoir tous les élements dans son ecosysteme(du Datacenter à l’utilisateur) pour permettre la meilleure experience utilisateur dans ce type d’infrastructure:

Whatever, Whenever, Where ever.

 Ces 3W remplaçant les 3 A:

 Any App , Anywhere, Any User

Nouveau plugin pour le Citrix Reciever
Il crée un nouveau disque dans le poste de travail qui est crypté (safe zone).
Dans les stratégies il est possible de créer des règles de sécurités très granulaires (exemple : enregistrement des documents avec Office uniquement dans la safe zone, interdiction d’ouvrir les documents de la safe zone avec les applications locales…)

Ce nouveau plugin ne consomme pratiquement pas de ressources. il n’encrypte qu’un petite partie du poste de travail de l’utilisateur. Ideal quand on travaille avec son ordinateur personnel et que l’on ne veut crypter tout le contenu de son portable.

La protection se fait par mot de passe qui est demandé à chaque ouverture de session.
Ce plugin est administrable à distance et permet à un administrateur très facilement de supprimer la Safe Zone du PC en cas de vol par exemple.

Le plugin sera très prochaine disponible.

Simplicité d’installation :
.10 minutes pour l’installation
.10 clics pour la configuration (nouvelle MMC = DesktopStudio)
.10 secondes pour ajouter un nouvel utilisateur

L’hyperviseur :
XenDesktop5 intègre des fonctionnalités de PVS qui permettent de déployer des VMs depuis une image configurée dans Desktop Studio sans changer de console.
La simplicité d’installation, de configuration et de création de VMs permet de réaliser des POCs encore plus rapidement.

Toutes la machines créées depuis un master, ont un disque privé dans l’hyperviseur pour stocker les modifications.
Citrix recommande l’utilisation d’un stockage NFS quelque soit l’hyperviseur pour ces disques.
Le mode de stockage dit « File » génère moins d’I/O disque que le mode « Bloc ».

La gestion de l’image de base (Master) est faite sous forme de Snapshot.
A chaque modification il est conseillé de faire un snapshot, XenDesktop « reconstruit » un master à partir de l’image de base et des snapshots pour le distribuer.
Cette solution permet de simplifier les mises à jour et si besoin de revenir rapidement en arrière en cas de problème.

La gestion des pools d’hyperviseurs par les DDC est maintenant répartie. Avant, il y avait un DDC d’actif qui communiquait et envoyait des informations aux hyperviseurs. Maintenant, chaque DDC communique avec un hyperviseur pour répartir la charge des DDC.

Le choix du DDC pour la gestion du pool d’hyperviseurs est aléatoire, si un DDC n’est plus joignable, une élection est réalisée pour qu’un DDC présent reprenne la gestion du pool d’hyperviseurs.

L’administration :
XenDesktop 5 permet aussi une administration simplifiée.
L’arrivée de la console Desktop Director (Web) permet de déléguer des tâches d’administration à plusieurs personnes sur l’environnement XenDesktop.
Cette console apporte aussi des informations importantes sur les ressources utilisées par les VMs et les serveurs XenDesktop.
Son accès peut s’y faire depuis n’importe quel navigateur.

Il n’y a pas de base de données. Prévoir donc la mise en place d’un serveur EdgeSight pour avoir un historique et des rapports personnalisés.

Le client :
Le client XenDesktop est compatible Mac (OS X, Ipod, Ipad), Android, BlackBerry, Linux et PC.
L’interface Web a été retravaillée et simplifiée.

Avec l’arrivée de HDX la remonté des Webcam est possible. Les drivers génériques inclus dans le VDA permettent de compresser le flux vidéo et donc de diminuer la consommation de la bande passante.
De plus, la vision locale de la webcam ne transite pas sur le réseau mais reste en local sur le poste client.

Le client XenDesktop s’adapte en fonction :
- Des performances du poste local (GPU, CPU, Flashplayer…)
- De la qualité et de la vitesse du lien entre le poste client et la VM XenDesktop
- Des performances de l’hyperviseur

Cela permet à XenDesktop, par exemple, de faire du « rendering flash» sur le poste client si Flashplayer est installé, de déterminer le meilleur taux de compression en fonction du lien…
Les clés USB et autres périphériques de stockage USB sont mappés dans la session en cours. Il n’est plus nécessaire de déconnecter la session pour pouvoir les utiliser.

Activlan est présent à Berlin pour le premier Synergy organisé par Citrix en dehors des USA.
Plus de 3200 personnes sont attendus cette semaine, pour participer aux ateliers techniques et présentations commerciales autour des technologies de l’infrastructure d’accès et des enjeux du cloud computing.
